Devotional Meaning:
St. Kateri Tekakwitha, known as the “Lily of the Mohawks,” was a 17th-century Mohawk-Algonquin woman who converted to Catholicism despite fierce opposition from her tribe. Orphaned by smallpox at age four, which left her face scarred and vision impaired, she embraced the faith with extraordinary devotion. She lived a life of prayer, penance, and service, caring for the sick and elderly. Kateri is the patron saint of Native Americans, ecology, the environment, and those who face ridicule for their faith. Her feast day is celebrated on July 14.
